Burro’s Tail (Sedum morganianum), also known as Donkey’s Tail or Lamb’s Tail, is a trailing succulent with long, trailing stems covered in plump, bead-like leaves.

how to grow and care for Burro’s Tail:

  1. Light requirements: Burro’s Tail thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window that receives several hours of indirect sunlight per day. However, it can also tolerate partial shade. Avoid exposing it to direct, intense sunlight for extended periods, as it can scorch the leaves.
  2. Temperature: This succulent prefers moderate temperatures between 60?F and 75?F (15?C to 24?C). Protect it from extreme temperature fluctuations and frost. It is not frost-tolerant, so if you’re growing it outdoors, bring it inside or provide adequate protection during winter.
  3. Watering: Burro’s Tail has low water needs. Water it sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. In the active growing season (spring and summer), water it about once every 2-3 weeks. Reduce watering in the winter, allowing the plant to go into a period of dormancy. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s important to ensure the soil is dry before watering again.
  4. Soil: Ensure the succulent is planted in well-draining soil. A cactus and succulent potting mix or a mixture of regular potting soil, perlite, and coarse sand works well. Good drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogged soil.
  5. Fertilizer: Burro’s Tail does not require frequent fertilization. However, you can feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength during the active growing season (spring and summer). Apply the fertilizer once every 2-3 months. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
  6. Propagation: Burro’s Tail can be propagated through stem or leaf cuttings. Allow the cut ends to callous over for a few days to a week, then plant them in well-draining soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until roots develop, and then treat them as you would mature plants.
  7. Pruning: Pruning is not usually necessary for Burro’s Tail. However, you can trim back any leggy or overgrown stems to maintain a more compact and bushy growth habit. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears for pruning.
  8. Pests and diseases: Burro’s Tail is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for common succulent pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. If you notice any signs of infestation, isolate the affected plant and treat it with an appropriate pesticide or a solution of water and mild soap.

Burro’s Tail is a beautiful succulent that adds an elegant touch to hanging baskets or as a trailing element in container gardens. With proper care and the right conditions, it will thrive and delight you with its cascading growth and unique bead-like leaves.
